TRY A NEW APPROACH TO THIS EASY-TO-USE MEDIUM THAT ALLOWS YOU TO CHANGE YOUR COMPOSITIONS AS YOU WORK.

By Ron Colgrove

Developing an idea

I frequently come across buildings, landscapes and beach scenes whose shapes and shadows catch my eye. Sometimes I’m able to stop and do a felt-pen sketch on-site, but other times I simply shoot photos for reference. Either way, when I’m back in my studio with my reference material, I begin producing a rough preliminary sketch on vellum tracing paper. In some cases the sketch will become a strictly pen and ink drawing, but in other cases it’ll become the basis for a limited-edition silkscreen print that I enhance with various strengths of watercolor washes.

A Simple Approach Demonstration Item #1 of 5

PHOTOGRAPHING THE SUBJECT. I found the textures and shadow patterns in this abandoned old house near my home to be appealing, so I photographed it in both summer and winter. This allowed me to get good reference photos of the house and the surrounding foliage.

  • hey marvelous little journal ya got there :-) I employ the same design template on my website yet unfortunately for whichever odd factor it appears to stream at a higher speed on this blog although your own provides even more content. Are you currently getting any individual plugins or widgets which speed it up? If you could quite possibly reveal the names so maybe I could use these on my personal internet site so twilight breaking dawn users could watch twilight eclipse online trailers and videos swifter I would be happy – regards in advance :)

    Hello Hubpages!
I checked out your blog site and it seems like it loads quickly for me. To answer your question, I am not using ANY plugins or widgets on my blog site. Perhaps that is why it is so fast? I don’t have a lot of code around slowing it down. I do make sure to post my photos as either JPG or GIFs and keep them below 1 Mg in size. I think that this makes a huge difference.

GREAT blog site by the way. I became a Twilight fan only a few weeks ago. Your site is one of the better ones around!
